Music

Alice Boyd is a singer-songwriter and sound artist based between south London and Bristol. Her music explores our interconnectedness with the natural world, intertwining folk-inspired harmonies, ambient electronics and field recordings.

From making music with plants, through to recording underwater insects, Alice’s work draws attention to the often unnoticed sounds of our environments. Since her time as Artist in Residence at the Eden Project, Alice and her band have performed in botanical gardens, ancient woodlands and music venues across the UK.

Described as a “perfectly judged tangle of synthetic and human voices, silences, field recordings, and unearthly gurgles” (The Sonification), Alice’s music invites us to ponder the intersection of human life and the landscapes we call home.

Alice’s music has been featured on BBC Introducing, BBC Radio 6 and BBC Radio 3’s ‘Secrets of the Scottish Rainforest’.

Alice’s music beautifully reframes the urgent climate crisis into an opportunity for reconnection with nature.

A perfectly judged tangle of synthetic and human voices, silences, field recordings, and unearthly gurgles… From The Understory feels like one of those precious first albums that contains the untapped energy of everything that could happen next.
— Jay Richardson, The Sonification
Alice’s work reminds me that thoughtful attunement to the world through sound can be an act of pure play and generosity. Her work is deeply careful, but always opens itself to the listener with humour and adventure, which is a rare gift when engaging with the climate themes Alice pursues.
