Alice Boyd is available for live performances, workshops, sound installations, compositions, audio work and creative collaborations.

Working with voice, field recordings, composition and environmental sound, Alice creates music and sound works that invite audiences to listen more closely to the natural world and the places we inhabit. Her work spans live performance, spatial sound, radio, podcasts, film, workshops and digital storytelling, with past projects including work for BBC Radio 4, Ffern, the RSPB, Knepp Wildland, Wellcome Collection, Kings Place, TOAST and the Eden Project.

Live performance

Alice performs in a range of formats, from intimate solo sets to collaborative performances with harp, vocal harmonies and band arrangements.

Solo show

Alice’s solo performance brings together songs, voice, synths, field recordings and live electronics. Developed from her BBC Radio 4 documentary Shifting Soundscapes, the first iteration of the show was performed across Europe while supporting Yann Tiersen.

Alice also performs as a duo with harpist Rachel Kitchlew, reimagining their songs and sound works through harp, vocals, electronics and field recordings.

Band / acoustic trio

Alice also performs with long-time collaborators Daisy Jean Russell and Jacob Norris, bringing a more acoustic, harmony-led arrangement of her songs, while still weaving in field recordings and environmental sound.

Field recording & workshops

Field recording:

Alice creates field recordings and sound maps for organisations, films, podcasts, installations and digital projects, documenting the sounds of landscapes, species and changing environments. Recent work includes field recordings for Ffern and Knepp Wildland’s interactive sound map, and on-screen field recording for the RSPB’s film, ‘Return’.

Workshops:

Alice leads field recording workshops and listening walks for festivals, venues, schools, arts organisations and community groups.

These sessions include deep listening exercises, introductions to field recording equipment, creative prompts, sound walks, hydrophones, contact microphones and electromagnetic sensors - encouraging participants to hear familiar places in new ways.

Past workshops include sessions with Snape Maltings, Henry Moore Foundation, Timber Festival, Weber State University and Brockwell Greenhouses, among others.

Sound installations

Alice creates site-specific and spatial sound installations using field recordings, interviews, composition and environmental sound.

Her installations often explore the relationship between people and place, drawing attention to the layered sound worlds of landscapes, gardens, cities and changing ecosystems.

Past installation work includes:

Kings Place: The Sounds of King’s Cross - A spatial sound installation created using field recordings and interviews from the urban green spaces of King’s Cross. Presented through d&b audiotechnik’s Soundscape system.

TOAST: The Curious Mind - A site-responsive sound installation created for TOAST, bringing together field recordings and ambient composition

Kew’s Wakehurst: Voices from the Meadow - a collaboration between presenter Annabel Ross, sculptor Donnacha Cahill and sound artist Alice Boyd, celebrating meadow species


Radio, podcast & presenting

Alice works across radio, podcast and audio storytelling as a presenter, producer, composer, sound designer and guest contributor.

Her audio work often combines interview, narration, field recordings and music, creating immersive stories about nature, place, creativity and environmental change.

She created Shifting Soundscapes for BBC Radio 4, is presenter and producer of Found Sounds for Ffern’s As the Season Turns podcast and is co-producer of BBC Radio 3 Unwind’s Sleep Tracks. She has also previously worked with The Guardian, Wellcome Collection and BBC Country file Magazine.

Alice is also available for radio, podcast and interview features, speaking about field recording, music, listening and the natural world. She has appeared as a guest on Cerys Matthews’ BBC Radio 6 Music show, spoken on Erland Cooper’s Ultimate Calm, been interviewed for the Get Birding podcast, and had her music featured across BBC Radio 2, 3, 4 and 6 Music.

Composition

Alice composes original music for film, podcasts, campaigns, installations and digital experiences. Her compositions often blend folk-inspired vocals, ambient textures, electronics and field recordings, creating sound worlds rooted in landscape, memory and ecological change.

Past composition work includes:

RSPB: Return of the White-Tailed Eagle - Alice composed music for the RSPB film ‘Return’, about the return of the white-tailed eagle.

EarthPercent’s Feat. NATURE campaign: All We Are - A song written by Alice, created in collaboration with The Listening Planet for EarthPercent’s Sounds Right initiative

Under the Midnight Sun - Alice co-created the audiovisual film ‘Under the Midnight Sun’ with filmmaker Michelle Sanders, creating an atmospheric score that responds to Arctic landscapes.


Talks & presentations

Alice gives talks and presentations on listening, field recording, sound, creativity and our relationship with the natural world.

Drawing on her work as a musician, sound artist and audio producer, her talks explore how sound can deepen our connection to place, reveal environmental change and help us listen more closely to the world around us.

Past talks include a TEDx talk on listening as a tool for change, regular talks for St Peter’s College Oxford summer school, and presentations during her residency at Weber State University’s Ogden College in Utah.

Social media and digital collaborations

Alice creates thoughtful digital content around field recording, listening, music and the natural world, sharing process-led videos across YouTube, Instagram, Substack and TikTok.

She is open to collaborations with aligned organisations, brands and campaigns, particularly where there is a genuine connection to sound, nature, landscape, creativity, sustainability or the outdoors.

Alice is also open to bespoke projects that sit between performance, sound art, storytelling, education and environmental engagement.
