Written and composed by Alice Boyd for songwriter Tom Rosenthal’s podcast Strangers on a Bench, “A Seal Called Noon” responds to a gentle, wistful bench-side conversation in which a stranger describes a distant seal they’ve named Noon.
Blending Alice’s folk-inspired songwriting with her field recordings of a real seal on the Norfolk coastline, the song gives voice to the interviewee’s quiet yearning: for companionship, for a simpler life, for someone who understands them.
Like the podcast itself, “A Seal Called Noon” reflects on the small moments of understanding and connection we can find in unexpected places.
